Lifeline Canberra estimates that over 40,000 Canberrans are adversely affected by their own problem gambling or that of a person they are close to . In every year from 2001/2 to 2004/5, the ACT had the highest number of poker machines per capita in Australia with 20.7 per 1000 adults in 2004/5 against the national average of 13 . The ACT Government collected $51.7m from gambling taxes in 2007/08 .
