9. Unborn children
The preamble to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that "the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth". However, in a supreme irony, the ACT’s Human Rights Act has limited the right to life so it applies only from birth. The ACT also allows abortion on demand for any reason at any stage of pregnancy, having removed the legal protection that once existed for the unborn child. Measures that once supported pregnant women, such as the provision of a booklet (provided independently of the abortion
clinic) detailing abortion risks and showing pictures of children in the womb, and a 72-hour cooling off period prior to an abortion, have also been removed. What measures will your government take to protect unborn children and support women struggling with an unexpected pregnancy? Will you reintroduce the Health Regulation (Maternal Health Information) Act
1998 (the Osborne bill) which once provided such protection for women and unborn children? |
